Poe

I couldn’t relax until I knew Bailey was back home. Relief filled me when I heard her heels click across the foyer. Heard her go into the kitchen and then into Grim’s room. But I still couldn’t rest. Not with Raine roaming around in the shadows. Not without speaking to Bailey first.

We usually slept together, all of us, in Bailey’s room. So being in separate beds tonight felt strange. Like I was missing a limb or something. There was a deep ache festering that made me sick to my stomach.

A light knock rapped on the door. “Come on in, Bailey.” I could smell her sweet scent as soon as she approached.

The door creaked open, and she sauntered in, dressed in silk pajamas. “Hi,” she purred. She looked tired but the smile on her face loosened the knot in my chest.

I patted the bed, motioning for her to sit next to me. “Hi, beautiful.”

She curled up next to me, her sweet scent invading my senses even stronger. “I missed you.”

I wrapped my arm around her. “I take it you and Grim made up. Did he apologize?”

She giggled, her breath hitching. “Yes, he certainly did.”

I chuckled. Knowing Grim, I’m sure he went above and beyond groveling. And seeing how she was clenching her thighs together, he most likely did it in the most devious way.

“Good. How was your night with Maureen? You two have fun?” Bailey was a hard woman to read. She kept so much locked away in that beautiful head of hers.

She nodded against my chest and took a few deep breaths. “It was nice being back in my old house. So many memories there.” She threw a leg over mine. “I told Maureen everything. And she was so supportive. I should have confided in her ages ago.”

I planted a kiss on the top of her head. “That’s fucking awesome, Bailey. I knew she wouldn’t let you down. It’s good to have friends like her. Friends like that will never abandon you.”

She sat up and looked into my eyes. “Are they still mad at you?”

I loved how selfless she was. Always thinking about everyone else’s happiness before her own. “Don’t worry about us, little fox. We’ve had many fights over the years. Nothing we can’t come back from.”

“Have you seen… him since I’ve been gone?” Her eyes were wide with curiosity, not fear. That told me what I had been suspecting. She wasn’t afraid of Raine. She was afraid of how we’d react to her asking about him.

I nodded. “I did. He came in here, asking about you.”

She sighed. “Why didn’t you tell me about him before, Poe? I don’t understand.”

My heart ached. I hated that I kept secrets from her. “I don’t know. No. That’s not true. I thought that if I said his name out loud then it would summon him to you. As I told Grim and Saint, I never saw him before you moved in. Mrs. Wickford confessed to me one night that she killed her husband.
